Meyer Lansky
The Mobs accountant
July 4, 1902 in Grodno, Belarus Maier Suchowjansky, Meyer Lansky, was born. His family immigrated to America from Imperial Russia in 1911. Once coming to America, his parents couldn’t remember his birthday, so they gave him the birthday of July 4th for his immigration records. His name was then Americanized to Meyer Lansky. He grew up on Manhattan's lower east side. During his childhood he faced violence. Which, growing up in that time period in New York it is normal to see violence. He was renowned for his prodigious mathematical abilities. He also had a very self assured demeanor about him. He graduated 8th grade and took on tool work. He later ended up becoming a mechanic.
Lansky’s work spanned the pre-Prohibition days of the New York City rackets. Lansky was a short, even-tempered man. He provided a counterbalance to the hot-headed mob members. He was a key figure in the Jewish wing of the Italian-Jewish mob. He was often times referred to as the behind-the-scenes financier. He avoided the limelight that came with open violence. He had the nickname The Mob’s Accountant and Secretary of the Treasury.
