April is Autism Awareness Month. April 2nd is Autism awareness day. There are people out there who don’t know it, or only acknowledge it during this month. What people don’t get is what is a month for some, is a lifetime for others.

I myself am not autistic. I have 2 children who are. I know people out there throw a fit when it comes to the leveling of it. Which I understand to a point. It is a Spectrum. No 2 autistic people are the same. Like my oldest son A, when diagnosed he was diagnosed as a level-1 or high-functioning. My son C, was diagnosed a level-3 or serve Autism.

A is one you would never actually guess he is autistic unless you talk to him or really know him. Whereas C, I get looks and the question “does he have autism?” C is nonverbal.

A never toe walked, flapped his hand, or avoided eye contact. These are the things you are told to watch for. A does have special interests that he hyper fixated on. He doesn’t stim. But that’s okay. That does not mean he is not autistic.

C was different. He said 5 words from 12 months to 15 months old. At 15 months, he stopped. He reverted back to basically being a newborn. He avoided eye contact, and he flapped his hands. I fought harder to get him tested than I did his older brother.
