Escape attempts at Alcatraz and the people who tried.

This article will be all about the escape attempts at Alcatraz and who made those attempts. There were 14 attempted escapes from Alcatraz. There were 36 men who tried to escape. From everything I have learned from all my research, Alcatraz was tough but treated those who did what they were supposed to be pretty good compared to other prisons.

In 1936, a man by the name of Joe Bowers attempted an escape. While he was working his job burning trash at the incinerator, he decided he was going to attempt it. He started climbing up and over the chain link fence at the islands edge. He refused officers' orders to climb back down. A correctional officer that was stationed in the west road guard tower shot Bowers. He fell 50 to 100 feet to the shore below. He died due to his injuries.

In the year 1937, two men named Theordore Cole and Ralph Roe decided they were going to try to escape. They were working in the prisons mat shop in the model industries building. Over a period of time, they had filed their way through the flat iron bars on the window. After climbing through the window, they made their way down to the waters edge.
